I chose to focus on cyber bullying. Mom said she's had no experience with bullying in our family. We discussed how she and Dad have never allowed us children to participate in chat rooms. Once we got older they allowed us to get an email, use Messenger Chat, and Facebook. However, all use of the internet was closely monitored. Computers were always in the common area where no one could have complete privacy when they're on the internet. My parents also installed a Net Nanny protection on the computer to help avoid accidental run-ins with innappropriate material. They also expected us to be open with them and tell them if anything happened that was innapropriate or scary to us.
I also told Mom about one of the suggestions made in the reading that parents teach their children how to appropriately use Internet resources, including creating a blog as a family. She and I agreed to work together over the summer to do just that.
I feel that my Mom is already prepared and knowlegeable about Internet safety, so our discussion was not very informative. We've had several discussions like this one before. However, talking with my parents about this topic has made me more aware of how important it is for parents and teachers to take action to make the Internet safe and useful to young children.

Ideas for Integrating Technology

Use online resources to enable children to create their own drawings on the computer, then combine them into a PowerPoint presentation to display during Parent/teacher conferences.

Use Stellarium to give students a glimpse of the night sky that they otherwise would not be able to get living in the city. Hinckley, “An Ensign to the Nations, a Light to the World,” Ensign, Nov 2003, 82
In essence, President Hinckley discusses the sacred calling of Latter Day Saints to uphold and protect the sacred values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Among the various dangers and sins he discusses that are plaguing us today was that of technology for children, youth, and adults. He promised us that if we stand firm in what we know to be right, no matter what happens, or how hard it gets, the Lord will stand by us and will exalt us in the end. He won’t leave us alone ot fight the battles that are coming.

What were the most important things you learned from the readings?

I learned most importantly that it is a sacred responsibility as parents and teachers to provide children with the guidance and protection and knowledge. The world children live in is full of the dangers of technology, and it is up to us as adults to help children understand and be safe from those dangers. However, it is also important that we provide them with meaningful and rich experiences with technology to prepare them to be successful in this technology-rich world.

How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?

I will be more proactive in how I view technology. I will actively seek to make it part of a rich environment centered around learning (spiritually and secularly), and be sure to place appropriate limits to protect from the tragedy that could occur. I will also educate those I’m responsible for on how to avoid the dangers and how to handle them when they do come.

How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?

It really struck me how serious a responsibility this is- to educate and protect children and youth, as well as myself. I would most importantly encourage others to take this responsibility seriously. I would also encourage them to participate in wholesome technological activities with me, such as creating a family blog to keep in touch over long distances. I would also encourage children and youth to follow the guidelines put in place, to respect not to resent them. I would help them understand the reasons behind those guidelines.

What I learned from watching others' presentations

JennCobb pointed out an interesting idea that I hadn't really considered before; that is, utilizing various different kinds of technology in the classroom gives students who normally struggle with the 'traditional' way of learning to discover their strengths and areas in which they can excel. I also noticed a theme among the different presentations I viewed as well as my own research that using technology, especially specially designed computer programs, will help further children's development in so many different areas- cognitive, social, and traditional subjects like math, science, literacy, and writing.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://amyhiattece.blogspot.com/2009/04/what-i-learned-from-watching-others.html' title='What I learned from watching others' Such an approach to writing makes it fun and exciting rather than a chore for students.
Lesson:
I would first introduce the proofreading activities to the students and encourage them to complete several activities to learn about proper writing techniques. I would help the students set up a sun dial outside our classroom. At the start of the day we would take a picture of it and note its shadow with a line of chalk on the sidewalk. Then throughout the day the class we would go back outside and take more pictures to note how the shadow has changed. I would have to help model where and how to take the picture so that the image and angle remain consistent so we could more easily compare shadows throughout the day, but I think students would be able to actually take the picture as the day progresses. The students could also take pictures of their own shadows at different times of the day. At midday I would encourage students to voice their speculations as to why the shadows are different lengths and directions. At the end of the day I would give student the information to explain the real reasons why. We would compile all our pictures in a PowerPoint presentation to use as the culminating activity.

Poetry Online

http://www.gigglepoetry.com/poemcategories.aspx
Children tend to not like poetry because of the approach teachers take to teaching poetry. She works in one of the Provo School District elementary schools. There were a few computers, audio with wireless headsets, and an overhead projector in her 2nd grade classroom. She said the school also provided digital projectors that the teachers could check out, but there was a limited number available. The library had some computers, and there was a den with a projector set up for large groups. She said she would like to have more computers available to the children. She talked about how useful computers are for the children, and how much she wished her students had more opportunities to spend time on the computer. She also expressed a desire to have access to digital cameras.
She explained to me that she connects technology use to inquiry learning. Children love to explore and discover. Often times teachers can give students literal, hands-on experiences, like exploring in the dirt on the playground to learn about worms, but sometimes the topics of the lessons make hands-on activities difficult if not impossible. For example, the Core Curriculum includes requirements about the solar system or space. Without the use of technology it is impossible to utilize inquiry learning in that topic.
Talking with this student teacher made me think about how important technology is for students and young children. She kept saying what a shame it is that technology is not more readily available in classrooms. I was surprised at how much more effective and enjoyable her lessons would be if she was able to use more technology, especially computers. I didn’t think computers would be that important for young children, but as I talked with her I realized that when used appropriately and with the right amount of guidance and scaffolding even very young children can benefit from computer time.

Google Earth Tour

http://sites.google.com/site/amyhiattipt287/my-files?pli=1

Google Earth Outline

Location

Activity

Google Earth Content

1. One of the specifications addresses using geographic tools to identify the location of various ecosystems. Therefore, I will have a unit on ecosystems in my class, and as part of that unit we will complete this activity over the course of a week, looking at one specific ecosystem each day. We will experience different kinds of ecosystems that exist on Earth, learn about their qualities, and why they exist where they do.

Pedagogy
I will be using whole class discussions to open each session of this lesson as we use Google Earth to find at least one example of each ecosystem. This lesson will be the introduction to a unit of study that goes further in depth about each kind of ecosystem we address in this lesson, as well as other ecosystems that may come up as the unit progresses. To start out we will have a brief discussion and review about the general characteristics of each ecosystem, using Google Earth. Then, also as a whole class or in small groups, we will complete a hands-on activity related to that ecosystem. Using both direct instruction and inquiry-based learning will be useful to help students grasp concepts and maintain ownership of their own learning.

Technology
We will be using Google Earth to complete this lesson. It is a very useful tool to give children a glimpse into what the world looks like in other parts of the planet. It is easy to use, which is important when working with children. Giving students the knowledge of how to use it will enable interested students to search it on their own time to discover more about the world around them. It is also a good tool for both individual and group work.

Week 6

Week 5 PLE

What is the content you’ll be using in your lesson?
In my 2nd grade classroom, I will be addressing the Language Arts Standard 1: Objective 2, which requires students to learn how to use several different mediums, including video, to present information and to discuss the different reasons why we view media.
I will also address the Content Core, Standard 1: Objective 1, which addresses lessons on health and safety.

What is the pedagogy you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content?
Students will work to create their videos instructing about good health and safety habits, which we will have discussed in a unit of study. As they gather and organize information they will learn about the use of technology, as well as remind themselves what habits they should be forming to keep themselves healthy and safe. One of the best ways to learn about something is to come up with a way to teach it.

What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?
We will be using Photostory, a program that enables users to create videos. This fits with the pedagogy because it will help students explore the options for using technology to create art (in this case, videos) that they could use later. It also provides them with a clear, fun way to organize and showcase their thoughts about the topic.

Storyboard

I couldn't get the pictures big enough to make the words read-able, so here's the text again:

1- We all love to get to play with our friends and be happy. But, so we can be strong enough to work hard and play lots, we have to follow the rules of health and safety.

2- Wash your hands before you eat, after you play outside or use the bathroom so germs don’t stay on your hands and make you sick. Also, it’s important not to put your hands in your mouth or on your face so the germs can’t get inside your body.

3- It’s important to eat lots of yummy, healthy food, not just sweets all the time. That way your body gets the nutrients it needs to keep you strong so you can play hard!

4. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables especially. They’ll help you not to get sick. And they actually taste really good too!

5- Keep moving! Running and jumping are fun, and they keep you strong and healthy.

6-Sometimes we can’t help but get sick. If you have a cold and you’re coughing and sneezing make sure you cover your nose and mouth so you don’t spread your cold to other kids. it’s best if you have to cough or sneeze to use a tissue so your hands don’t get germs all over them. If you don’t have a tissue, use your shirt sleeve.

7- Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss them at least once. That way your teeth stay nice and white and clean, and your breath doesn’t stink.

8- Mom and dad keep cleaning supplies in the house. These supplies are good to help them keep your house clean and fresh-smelling, but they’re very dangerous to little children. Stay as far away as you can from all cleaning supplies because if you touch or accidently drink them they will make you sick and you may have to go to the hospital.

9- It’s fun to ride your bike or go rollerblading outside. Make sure you wear your helmet, knee pads, and any other padding your parents tell you to. That way if you fall down accidently you won’t get too hurt and have to stop playing.

10- Firefighters and policemen are your friends. They’re there to keep you safe. If your house or school catches on fire, a firefighter will make sure you get out safe. Police make sure everyone follows the laws so you can stay safe and live happily. They keep bad people away from you.

11-Look both ways when you cross the street. Wait for an adult to hold your hand. If there’s a crossing guard wait for him or her to tell you it’s ok to cross. It’s hard for car drivers to see you, but it’s easier for them to see an adult who’s taller, so you are safer if you’re with an adult.

12-Whenever you get in the car make sure you put your seatbelt on, or if you have a booster seat make sure you sit in it the right way. That way, if there’s a crash or if the driver has to stop the car quickly you’ll be safe. Seatbelts may not always be comfortable, but they keep you safe so you can keep on playing and working hard!

13-If it’s raining, snowing, or cold outside, make sure you wear your coat and a hat and gloves if your mom and dad say so. If you’re cold and wet you can get sick more easily. And it’s harder to have fun if you aren’t comfortable.

TPACK questions

What is the content you are focusing on in your science lesson?
I am focusing on the moon’s phases and placement in the sky during different times of the month, and year for that matter. This fulfills the requirements of Standard 1: Objectives 1 and 2 of the Utah State Core, which state: “Describe the appearance of Earth and the moon” and “Describe the movement of Earth and the moon and the apparent movement of other bodies through the sky” (http://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=3030) , respectively.
What is the pedagogy you are using and why is it a good fit with the content?
My pedagogy is a class experiment using Stellarium to explore how the moon changes shape and position in the sky. I prepared the dates and times we would look at the moon ahead of time so I could be sure to catch each phase and position I wanted. The children will have the resources to explore the night sky more after our lesson. One good extension I thought of after I posted the lesson would be to discuss with the children how the stars and planets move in relation to the moon in the night sky, then track that. If the time of year is right, I would suggest they go stargazing with their families to give them a real world experience to connect with what they see on the computer program.
What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?
I used a computer program called Stellarium. It provides a view of the night sky on any given day (even in the future) at any given time. It also allows you to zoom in on a specific point in the sky (the moon for example) to get a closer view. This is a good fit with the lesson objective to track the moon’s phases and position because by picking different times and days students can easily see what may be more difficult to see in real time.

TPACK and technological resources

Teaching requires a multi-faceted, and varied knowledge. Teachers must know how children develop and learn (PK), have a strong understanding of the topics they are teaching (CK), and know about the technological resources (TK). Without a strong knowledge in each of these areas, teachers lack the skills necessary to fully transmit their knowledge to the students. Not only do they need to have these three separate knowledges, but also need to be able to combine them. They must understand how to teach the concepts, which is very different from simply understanding those concepts (PCK). They must know which technologies apply usefully to a particular content area (TCK), and how to use technology in general to help students learn (TPK). Finally, a combination of all three areas in to one: knowing how to use technology to teach specific content in a manner that follows closely with how students learn (TPACK).

Kidspiration looks like a very useful tool for individual practice. I would find it a useful resource for students to have at home or during computer time at school to review concepts discussed in class. It spans the major subjects: Math, Science, reading/writing, and social studies, and has several good resources for each. For example, there is a section that enables you to make thinking maps -- like the web map-- to help organize ideas for a writing assignment. It also allows for integration with such activities as a science project of separating objects out by cerain criteria-- separate the animals from the plants, the weather-related pictures from the food-- then write about why you grouped the objects the way you did. A very useful resource for practice and review.

The Tech Savvy Teacher

view of ocean trench from Google Earth

Moon phase 7/18/09 early afternoon

Moon position (in the west) 7/18/09

moon phase 7/27 early afternoon

moon position (in the east) 7/27 evening

The Tech Savvy Teacher

Since The Tech Savvy Teacher is dedicated to providing teachers with resources to use technology in their classrooms to improve their lessons and help them more fully ready students for state testing and for the rest of their lives, I’ve put together my thoughts on some activities that could be done in a third grade classroom. There are so many resources available to teachers to help them in their classrooms. Technology helps clarify concepts for students, as well as provides them with memorable experiences. It keeps lessons from getting too boring, and adds spice to the classroom atmosphere.
For my lesson, I chose to fulfill the Core requirement for Third graders to “Understand the appearance of the Earth and moon.” There is a program called Stellarium that provides us with a view of the night sky from anywhere on earth, at any given time. In its introductory description it is described as “great for demonstrating phases of the moon - especially when it is cloudy outside.” I had to manipulate the time of year and time of day in order to find a time when the moon was actually visible in the night sky. However, we were able to trace the moon’s pattern across the sky on a certain night. We also gained a glimpse into the moon’s phases as we tracked it across several days. The students kept track of the moon’s position in the sky and its shape on worksheets I provided.
Technology was very useful in this lesson. The program Stellarium provided us with the opportunity to view the moon as it really looks in the sky, and to track it over a period of time. We didn’t have to wait until dark or spend a full month on this project to view all the moon’s phases. It provided us with glimpses like we never would have seen in real life, due to the limitations of our location and schedules. Children have the opportunity to go home and continue to experiment with different locations and times to see what the night sky looks like all around the world.
Another experiment I thought would be interesting is to download Google Earth, and spend time exploring all the different landforms on our Earth. Students have the opportunity to see storms in real time, to get a glimpse of the smoke rising from an active volcano that just erupted, to see the deep ocean trenches, and to even see their own town. An interesting integration lesson would be to use such glimpses from Google Earth and compare the Earth’s surface with that of the Moon. Students could also make a creative writing story about a little boy looking up at the moon (or other object in the night sky) and his counterpart alien child looking down at Earth from some celestial sphere. What would both see? What would they think about that ‘foreign’ sphere so far away?

RSS and Web 2.0

I really liked the idea of keeping all my websites organized in one place. RSS allows me to put all my favorites blogs and other webpages in one spot, then informs me whenever there are changes made, increasing my own productivity because I no longer have to go out and search every website for changes everyday. Web 2.0 sites like Delicious and Goodreads allow me to again to get organized and share information with others. Whenever I find a site particularly useful, I can save it on my Delicious account, then share that site with others who may find it interesting as well. Goodreads allows me to do the same with books. As an elementary school teacher, I think I will especially find Goodreads useful to help me find new books to share with my class and to enhance their learning experiences.

Assignment week 1

Well now that the 'assignments' link is working, I know what's going on...

OK, I don't have much technological background, my family isn't really tech-savvy. However, I've been learning really quickly since my last few years of high school. I know how to use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) and it's been pretty easy for me to figure out internet websites and all that. I grew up in a small town, so my schools didn't have a lot of funding for cool gadgets. I'm really looking forward to this class and finding out everything that's available, especially with new technology coming out all the time.

Hi all!

Ok, so I'm still not quite sure what I'm supposed to write for this first post... If I remember right, we're supposed to just introduce ourselves basically.
So here goes.
I'm Amy Hiatt. I'm from a small town in central North Carolina. I'm a junior at BYU studying Early Childhood Education with a minor in Spanish. I'm the second oldest of eight children, which is where I got my love for teaching and caring for young children. My hobbies include dancing (ballet, modern, and ballroom), playing the flute and piano, sports, and reading (Twilight is my new favorite book, as cheesy as it may seem). I'm kind of shy, but once you get to know me, I'm pretty easy going and like to have a good time. I'm really excited to be in this class and get to know all of you.
