Technology in the Classroom Powerpoint

After about 5 failed attempts, I discovered that SlideShare apparently has a grudge against Microsoft Office 2007. So here is my completed PowerPoint presentation- all 9slides of it. Sometimes technology causes more problems than it solves...

And now SlideShare only uploaded the first two slides of the second half of my presentation. Oh well. Here it is.

and here's the last technology I think would be useful to educators:

This website contains many different educational activities. The one pictured on the following slide gives students a review of grammar, then gives them a chance to proofread a brief selection. This would help them to practice the grammar skills they gain in class.
Teachers can use this as a supplement to grammar lessons. Once concepts are discussed in class, students can use this resource to get additional practice."

Technology in the Classroom PowerpointS

SlideShare apparently has something against me, and refuses to upload a PowerPoint of 9 slides. So I've done the next best thing (besides throwing my computer out of the window) and uploaded my PowerPoint in 2 halves. so here's the first half. second half follows.

Internet Safety-- "Doing"

I called my mother to discuss with her different ideas about internet safety. I chose to focus on cyber bullying. Mom said she's had no experience with bullying in our family. We discussed how she and Dad have never allowed us children to participate in chat rooms. Once we got older they allowed us to get an email, use Messenger Chat, and Facebook. However, all use of the internet was closely monitored. Computers were always in the common area where no one could have complete privacy when they're on the internet. My parents also installed a Net Nanny protection on the computer to help avoid accidental run-ins with innappropriate material. They also expected us to be open with them and tell them if anything happened that was innapropriate or scary to us.
I also told Mom about one of the suggestions made in the reading that parents teach their children how to appropriately use Internet resources, including creating a blog as a family. She and I agreed to work together over the summer to do just that.
I feel that my Mom is already prepared and knowlegeable about Internet safety, so our discussion was not very informative. We've had several discussions like this one before. However, talking with my parents about this topic has made me more aware of how important it is for parents and teachers to take action to make the Internet safe and useful to young children.

Ideas for Integrating Technology

Use online resources to enable children to create their own drawings on the computer, then combine them into a PowerPoint presentation to display during Parent/teacher conferences.

Use Stellarium to give students a glimpse of the night sky that they otherwise would not be able to get living in the city. Also use Stellarium for observing phases of the moon and stars, etc.

Internet Safety

What article did you choose to read for your fourth article?

Gordon B. Hinckley, “An Ensign to the Nations, a Light to the World,” Ensign, Nov 2003, 82
In essence, President Hinckley discusses the sacred calling of Latter Day Saints to uphold and protect the sacred values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Among the various dangers and sins he discusses that are plaguing us today was that of technology for children, youth, and adults. He promised us that if we stand firm in what we know to be right, no matter what happens, or how hard it gets, the Lord will stand by us and will exalt us in the end. He won’t leave us alone ot fight the battles that are coming.

What were the most important things you learned from the readings?

I learned most importantly that it is a sacred responsibility as parents and teachers to provide children with the guidance and protection and knowledge. The world children live in is full of the dangers of technology, and it is up to us as adults to help children understand and be safe from those dangers. However, it is also important that we provide them with meaningful and rich experiences with technology to prepare them to be successful in this technology-rich world.

How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?

I will be more proactive in how I view technology. I will actively seek to make it part of a rich environment centered around learning (spiritually and secularly), and be sure to place appropriate limits to protect from the tragedy that could occur. I will also educate those I’m responsible for on how to avoid the dangers and how to handle them when they do come.

How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?

It really struck me how serious a responsibility this is- to educate and protect children and youth, as well as myself. I would most importantly encourage others to take this responsibility seriously. I would also encourage them to participate in wholesome technological activities with me, such as creating a family blog to keep in touch over long distances. I would also encourage children and youth to follow the guidelines put in place, to respect not to resent them. I would help them understand the reasons behind those guidelines.

What I learned from watching others' presentations

JennCobb pointed out an interesting idea that I hadn't really considered before; that is, utilizing various different kinds of technology in the classroom gives students who normally struggle with the 'traditional' way of learning to discover their strengths and areas in which they can excel. I also noticed a theme among the different presentations I viewed as well as my own research that using technology, especially specially designed computer programs, will help further children's development in so many different areas- cognitive, social, and traditional subjects like math, science, literacy, and writing.
